Kolam or Kolangal is a type of rangoli that originated in the state of Tamil Nadu, anciently known as Tamilakam. It is basically a geometrical drawing composed of straight lines, circles, dots, curves, and loops that are drawn in the shape of a grid. Kolam designs are also known by a variety of names, like Muggu in Telugu and Tharai Aalangaram in Tamil. This tradition of drawing beautiful Kolam designs slowly spread out to the neighbouring states in the southern peninsula: Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka, and so on. With the Tamil diaspora being spread all over the world, one can find women making Kolam designs in various countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, etc. Every morning, the women in these south Indian households wake up early to make simple Kolam designs on the threshold of their homes. They believe that this is where the internal and external elements of their world meet, and this entrance or exit needs to be decorated for goodwill. Kolam designs are typically made using rice powder or white powders like chalk or chalk powder, white stone dust, synthetic colors, and so on. You will also find the use of turmeric powder sometimes to add some color to these simple Kolam designs.

While making Kolam designs is a part of the daily chores and it marks the beginning of a day in the household, quite often you will see more complex Kolam designs with a variety of colours in them. These are made for special or auspicious occasions, like festivals and weddings. A Tamil wedding is very different from a North Indian wedding, and this is especially true for a Tamil Brahmin wedding. Kolangal designs are an integral part of the decorations. Apart from their cultural value, they also add character to the venue. During the wedding festivities, all the Kolam experts in the family come together and make very elaborate and intricate Kolam designs.

Kolam designs are slightly different from rangoli designs as they are generally more geometric and well-defined as opposed to rangoli. There is no limit to your creativity while making new rangoli Kolangal designs, but they do require a lot of finesse. You can also make an easy kolam design if you like simple and spacious kolam designs for your daily rituals.

One of the simple hacks to achieve such breathtaking Kolam images is the use of household stuff as stencils. Like stainless steel plates, spoons, forks, container covers, following the floor tiles etc. If you think making circular patterns are tougher, go for other geometric shapes like squares or triangles. Another way to get around making a rangoli is the use of Pulli Kolam patterns, where you connect the dots and make small simple shapes. Of course, there are complicated designs too, but you still can attempt to make one with the help of these dots.
