Since the beginning of time, astrology has played a significant role in Indian culture. Especially, when it comes to weddings, astrology is deemed to play a significant role in ensuring that you will lead a happy and fulfilling relationship with your partner. While you may opt for different forms of aid from the stars, one such form that is gaining a lot of attention is Nadi astrology.

Nadi astrology or Nadi Shastra is one such astrology that can tell you about your past, present and future with just your thumbprint. Read on to learn more about the significance of the Nadi astrology at a big, fat Indian wedding.

The History Behind Nadi Astrology

Cupid Dreams

Down from the aeons of sages, who could look into the future of anyone who lived on earth, astrology predictions were written down on palm leaves. These predictions were then passed on from generation to generation. Then in the 12th century, these leaves were discovered by the Nayanar community in Vaideeshwaran Temple in Tamil Nadu.

They made copies of the Maharishi’s inscriptions on Nadi leaves and have been the only people that can decipher what they mean and make predictions. Today the Nadi Jyothists use these Nadi astrology leaves to predict the past, present and future.

Nadi - the Language on the Leaf

Each Nadi is a paper leaf that has a collection of engravings and is named after the sage that created them. Some common Nadis include Shukha Nadi, Brahma Nadi and Agathiya Nadi and a lot of them are written in the Tamil language. According to Nadi astrology, these inscriptions include the futures of all the people present on earth. Although this may be true, finding the Nadi of a person purely depends on luck.

In order to find your astrology through Nadi Shastra, the astrologer will take an impression of your thumb to identify the exact leaf that will provide predictions of your future. This, however, is easier said than done as each person's thumbprint contains more than 108 different features.

A few characteristics that are looked at include Chandra Rekha, Shanka Rekha and the Chakra Rekha. The thumb impression is used to find the right set of Nadi leaves. You will then have a session with the astrologer who will ask you details about your family and read out your prediction from the leaf. Very often the Nadi reader’s predictions will match up to specific details about your family!

So what does this mean for your marriage?

Marriage is an important milestone in one’s life and like every other aspect of your life you want to make sure that it is a joyous and fruitful one. When it comes to marriage, the rishis wrote many rules about timing the event of the wedding to ensure a prosperous married life.

1. Nadi Dosh

Vedic astrology comprises of 8 important aspects of a person's life which are analyzed before a wedding to ensure that the marriage is a perfect match. The eight aspects (kootas) contain a total of 36 points of which the Nadi is assigned 8 points. The Nadi plays a significant role when looking at the Vedic astrology of the couple.

For a match made in heaven, the Nadi Dosh (count) for a future husband and wife should be different. A husband and wife with the same Nadi Dosh get a count of zero. This Nadi score is based on several factors such as the position of the moon, the natal chart and a combination of physical and psychological factors. They can help determine the compatibility between you and your partner.

2. It may not always be good

If the Nadi Dosh of a future husband and wife is the same, this is not always the best outcome and can have negative influences on the married couple such as possible infertility or a fall out between the husband and wife. However, if you find that the Nadi Dosh is the same, do not fear because there are exceptions to the rule. For instance, if the bride and groom have a corresponding Rashi but a different Nakshatra, it can be considered an exception.

Alternatively, if the Rashi of the bride and groom are the same, it can be regarded as an exception.

What can you do about Nadi Dosh?

Knotting Bells

Don’t panic if you and your partner have the same Nadi Dosh as there are many ways you can change it. One way is by using certain remedial gemstones in your wedding jewellery. The gemstones you should use can vary depending on the situation. It can also be removed with a Nadi Dosh Nivaran Puja or donating food or clothes to Brahmin families.

Why should a millennial couple look into it?

The millennial generation is always looking for answers and Nadi astrology helps provide some insight on your compatibility with your partner. This is an important part of your marriage and one that should not be overlooked. You want to make sure that you are spending eternity with the right person and checking your marriage horoscope is a great way to set the foundation.

But remember that it is only one among many steps in a successful marriage.

How much of Nadi Astrology should you believe?

There are many things in this world that we cannot explain; some choose belief while others favour doubt. So if you are on the fence about whether or not you should trust Nadi astrology, you can use the advice and predictions to make decisions but don't rely only on what it says.

Marriage is hard work and it requires equal faith and compromise on both sides. The lack of communication or respect between a husband and wife will result in the downfall of any relationship regardless of the horoscope predictions. Astrology helps shine light in a path of darkness, but at the end of the day, it is up to you and your partner to make the marriage work!
