Full of different ceremonies and events, an Arya Samaj marriage is all about simplicity and is based on Hindu Brahmin weddings. These weddings place a higher emphasis on deities like Agni and Surya over Hindu Gods like Krishna, Shiv and Vishnu.

Executed as per the Vedic traditions, the Arya Samaj marriage is legally valid as per the Arya Samaj Marriage Validation Act, 1937 with the provisions of Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. Although Arya Samaj weddings are based on the Hindu style of tying the knot, the Arya Samajis do not believe in idol worship, which is why there is a difference between their weddings and Hindu weddings.

The Vedic rituals in the Arya Samaj marriages are quite simple. Like regular Hindu weddings, their weddings are centred around a fire, where the hymns recited are explained to the wedding couple.

In order to have an Arya Samaj marriage, the groom must be 21 years old or more and the bride should be 18 years old or more. The wedding couple should belong to the religions of either Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism or Jainism to be a part of the Arya Samaj marriage.

However, anyone who doesn’t belong to these religions can also be a part of it through a process called Shuddhi. Muslims, Christians, Parsis and Jews can convert into Hindus out of their free will and then be a part of the Arya Samaj marriage. The Arya Samaj has always been supporting inter-religious and inter-caste marriages. This makes this society one of the most forward-thinking ones in India!

Unlike Hindu weddings, Arya Samaj marriages don’t take more than 1 to 2 hours of your time to get you married. All you need are the right marriage documents, two Jaimalas and sweets. In order to have the perfect Arya Samaj wedding, make sure to book an Arya Samaj mandir and submit the required documents.

At the day of the wedding, the ceremony will begin with the Pandit explaining the holy Vedic hymns to you, while reciting them. Next will be the jai mala ceremony where the couple exchanges garlands. Then the bride has to wash the groom’s feet, hand and face, after which the groom eats honey, curd and ghee.

Now begins the Yagna and the couple takes rounds around the holy fire. The Kanyadaan ritual takes place, followed by the Pratigya Mantra, during which the couple hold each other’s hand and take wedding vows. While the groom recites mantras during Shilarohan, the brother of the bride has to place her foot on a stone, after which the couple performs the Parikrama around the fire 4 times. Just like the 7 vows of Hindu marriage, Arya Samaj marriage observes the Saptapadi around the fire.
