A) The AADHAR card name update process

The UIDAI website broadly lists two methods of AADHAR card name update on its website, online and offline. While the online process has only one way, there are three modes of updating information on your AADHAR card offline through AADHAR enrollment centres. Let us take you through the processes for each of these methods.

B) Steps for online AADHAR card name update:

1. Log in to the Self Service Update Portal using your AADHAR number and OTP that will be sent to your registered mobile number.

2. Select the fields to be updated, in this case - name.

3. Fill the required data in the selected field.

4. Submit the form and a URN will be generated.

5. Select the BPO for review of update.

6. Attach the scan of original supporting documents that are needed.

7. Using the URN number, check the AADHAR card name update status.

C) Steps for AADHAR card name update at enrollment centres:

The UIDAI website has three modes of updating information on the AADHAR card through enrolment centres, namely:

  • Update Client Standard - All biometric and demographic fields, as well as the local language, can be updated through this method.
  • Update Client Lite - All demographic fields, photo, as well as local language can be updated through this method.
  • Update through AUA (Authentication User Agency) Point Of Presence - This method can be used to update demographic fields only and the UIDAI may decide to use other/additional authentication factors apart from biometric authentication on the AUA device if required.

These are the three different methods of the offline AADHAR card name update. The process remains almost the same for all of them. Take a look:

1. Take your required documents needed for verification to the nearest enrollment or update centre. You can find a list of all the documents that can be used not only in AADHAR card name update but also address change etc on the UIDAI website.

2. You need to carry originals of all the supporting documents which will be scanned and handed back to you there and then.

3. The appointed officer at the centre will verify the documents and then enter all the data into their AADHAR software.

4. You will be required to do a biometric authentication while at the centre too.

5. After all the necessary checks and verifications are done, your AADHAR card name update receipt will be handed to you.

D) List of accepted documents for AADHAR card name update post marriage:

If you are a newlywed, you can easily use your marriage registration certificate or a document containing a proof of the marriage of the applicant issued by the Marriage Registrar, as a valid document for AADHAR card name update. But apart from this, there are a lot of other valid documents that you can use in the AADHAR card name update process.

  • Passport
  • Ration card
  • PAN card
  • Voter ID
  • Service photo ID cards issued by a PSU
  • Photo ID cards issued by the Government of India
  • Driving Licence
  • Identity Certificate containing the photo of the applicant on a proper letterhead issued by either a Gazetted Officer or a Tehsildar
  • Legally approved certificate of the name change
  • Marriage Certificate

The entire process of AADHAR card name update or any other kind of update usually takes up to 90 days. Once the process is complete, you can download your e-AADHAR card from the UIDAI website or visit the enrollment centre to get a soft copy of your updated card.
